A little bit about how and when you got started
I randomly got a job receptioning at a salon in high school. While working there, I began to see how much of an impact hair stylists can have on their clients’ lives. I wanted to be a day maker to others and do something that I was passionate about, so I attended the Aveda Institute of Minneapolis in 2009. I moved back to Bismarck right after getting my cosmetology license. Fabyoulous Salon & Spa had opened just a few months prior to my graduation and it was the only Aveda concept salon in Bismarck, and therefore the only place I wanted to work. I had fallen in love with what Aveda stands for as a company and the fact that it a natural product line. After working at the salon for three years as a stylist, the opportunity arose for me to purchase the salon from the previous owner. I had always had an entrepreneurial spirit and jumped at the chance. I absolutely love owning Fabyoulous and was just starting to toss the idea around of expanding when another opportunity fell into my lap to purchase an existing salon in Kirkwood Mall. We bought City Looks in October of 2014 and changed the name to SILO Salon.

What should people know about your business
We strive to be in line with Aveda’s mission. We are concerned about the environment and love giving back to others. Fabyoulous is an Aveda Concept salon, so we do stress-relieving rituals with each service. For example, with every color service, our guests will get a hand massage. Our staff is like a little family, and we all strive to go above and beyond for our guests. We take classes several times a year to keep up with the ever-changing hair industry so we can offer the very best!

What’s one tip that you have for other YPs that are interested in starting a business
Don’t start a business because you want to make a lot of money. If you do something you are passionate about, the money will come. You also have to find ways to set yourself apart from others. There are tons of salons in the Bismarck area, so we had to find our niche.
