A little bit about how and when you got started
Great North Insurance was founded in October of 2010. I had been working for a Fortune 500 financial institution for just short of 10 years. This specific company provided amazing training and support. They allowed me to run our branch in Fargo as my own business. The training I received is what gave me the opportunity and confidence to start an insurance agency from scratch (not having any clients or policies on day 1). We felt that the insurance industry was one that provided an opportunity for career growth and most importantly a challenge. I love going to work each day. I get to work with a team of professionals as well as members of our community. There is nothing better than helping local citizens as well as local business. We like to think of ourselves as an asset to the business owner rather than simply an expense.

What should people know about your organization
We believe that our client experience is a relationship not just a transaction. Our ‘job’ doesn’t stop when the policy is issued. In fact, that is when we feel that the relationship really starts. We are an independent agency, meaning we work with many insurance carriers. We work with national carriers like Nationwide and Travelers as well as smaller regional carriers. These relationships help us meet the everyday needs of our clients. We get the opportunity to find our clients coverage that is based on their needs personally and as a business, but we do so by ‘shopping’ it out and saving our client’s money. We try to provide our client with options because as a client that is what people want. They want to be able to choose verses working with a carrier that only provides one solution.

What’s one tip that you have for other YPs that are interested in becoming an entrepreneur
I believe that when you start a business you are in control of your future. You work hard and provide a service or product to a client, but when you grow you simply can’t do it all yourself. My advice to the YPs is simple. Surround yourself with great people. Hire people that are passionate, smart, and driven, then just get out of their way. Empower them to do their best and let them know you support them. As a business owner, you hire people, but people build the business. This is why I love going to work. I get to work with wonderful likeminded people that want to serve our clients, each other, and our community.
