A little bit about how and when you got started

BeeGee Designs, LLC was just a figment of my imagination until November 2012 when I took the plunge and started an actual “business,” but it hardly felt like that. I have been designing and creating all my life. When I was eight I was obsessed with designing house plans (yes… a strange hobby for a child). At summer camps, I always took arts and crafts as one, if not both, of my extracurricular activities. I taught myself to knit, crochet, and cross-stitch in middle school. In high school, my mom taught me how to sew and we took ceramics together at a local studio. Even today, I draw in my free time (and during meetings on my agenda) and enjoy painting and hand lettering.

In March of 2012, the Grand Forks Young Professionals hosted a fundraiser for Global Friends Coalition called Soup in the Studio. As a way to generate more interest for the unique event, I volunteered to attempt a website. I knew a small bit about programming from college, and I’m a fairly quick learner. So after a large bit of research and several attempts, a website was born!

The endeavor not only generated interest for the event (which turned out to be a huge success) but also for the design service I had volunteered. I quickly picked up a few more opportunities to create. My “clients” seemed happy and I was encouraged by many friends to start my own business. Although hesitant at first (as I never took a “business class” in my life), I soon saw the value that I offered through BeeGee Designs as an affordable yet professional designer focused on non-profits, small businesses, and organizations in our region (and across the country!).

What should people know about your business

I feel it is important for all non-profits and small businesses to have a web presence in this growing media age; however, such services can often be costly, time consuming, and overwhelming for the client. BeeGee Designs offers both basic and more advanced website design services at affordable prices. Although having a web presence is important, maintaining a professional and updated website is imperative. That is why I also offer a range of maintenance and upkeep options, from full-service by BeeGee Designs to an easy-to-use designer platform that clients can utilize to update the website themselves without any coding knowledge.

Although websites are my primary focus, I am not just a website designer! I also enjoy creating marketing and promotional designs – such as invitations, posters, logos, and monograms – and I can coordinate just about anything! From parties and weddings to fundraisers and shows, it is all about the details. And that’s what I’m all about, so my clients always expect something great… and incredibly organized!

What one tip do you have for other YPs that are interested in starting a business

I have several tips!

  1. Be confident! Know that you have something to offer and don’t be afraid to be incredibly proud of that. Market yourself!
  2. Be a part of your community and give back often – this will introduce you to potential clients and customers while making a positive impression and an empowering business environment.
  3. Be prompt and professional. Always get back to your clients or customers as soon as possible. Don’t keep them waiting.
  4. Be a perfectionist! I always tell my clients that I have incredibly high standards, and I won’t put my name on something I’m not proud of. Word of mouth is the strongest advertising you can get, whether positive or negative. Just make sure it is the former.
  5. Listen to your client but merge their needs and wants with your professional experience. Your name is on the end result.
  6. Although every business needs money to operate, you also need to create a life you are proud to call your own, both in your personal endeavors and in your business. So have values. Don’t go against your heart and listen to those who love you.
  7. And if you have an office, have an office dog! I love to visit those kinds of businesses!
